8:00 am to 11:00 am Drive to Park to Practice both Spear Fishing and Fly Casting
We will spend a few hours practicing casting and spear fishing. Fly fishing is difficult, but we will teach you the basics to get you going for the day. We will discuss the different components to fly fishing to include the rod, reel, line, backing, leader, fly rod familiarization, basic fly casting, and fly casting towards fish. We will also go over the basic safety procedures when spear fishing to include how to approach and spear a fish. We are using a weapon; therefore, it is important we stick to the four safety rules of handling your spear.
Four Safety Rules when Using Three Prong Spear or Hawaiian Sling
1) Never point your spear at anything you do not intend to shoot
2) Have positive control of the point of your spear at all times. For example, have your spear tip pointed toward the ground when walking.
3) Never calk or pull the rubber back until you acquire your target
4) Never swim with your spear in the calk or rubber pulled back position.
11:00 am – 5:00 pm – Fly Fishing and Spear Fishing
After our land lesson we will head to the boat and depart to the fishing grounds. Each evolution will be about two hours in duration. We will split into two person teams for safety.
Keep a close eye on your partner when spear fishing. Don’t point your spear in the direction of a person at any time. Always Have positive control of the spear tip. If you cannot see the spear prongs, then you do not have positive control of your spear. Keep calm and always check in with your partner. Know where your partner is and keep within eyesight. Work together to target fish. Communicate your intent and establish who is going to spear the fish. While one person spears the fish the other will monitor with the spear in the relaxed position-rubber not pulled back. Check your partner as they come to the surface, and ensure they disengaged their spear. Do not put yourself in the front of the spear and find safe spot to notify partner to disengage the spear. Staying safe is paramount to success.
We will have a target list of fish for you to shoot. Remember, what you spear is what you eat. We will spend about 30 minutes each spear fishing. If you are not spearing a fish, you will be monitoring your partner. Your instructor will be either in the water or on the boat providing extra layer of safety and guidance.
Fly fishing will be less demanding when it comes to safety, but we always practice safety. We will be in two person teams. You will need hat, proper sunglasses, and flats shoes. While walking with your partner you will maintain a safe distance while casting or trade off casting and spotting fish. Fly fishing isn’t easy, but working together may help you spot fish and cast. Remember this is the Superbowl of fly fishing, it isn’t easy. You may get frustrated and discouraged because of the conditions, casting ability, spotting fish and the lack of instant gratification. This is normal, most of us started where you are and its only through time and experience that you get half way decent at catching bonefish in Hawaii.
Watch your partner cast and see if you can make corrections based on what you learned and then have your partner monitor you. Help each other improve by making corrections together. Your guide is there to help you improve your cast and help you see fish.
5:00 pm to 7:30 pm Dinner preparation
If we caught fish to eat, then we will scale and fry the fish. We will complement fish with baked and sautéed vegetables. If we don’t catch fish, we will have garlic shrimp, rice, baked or sauteed vegetables and left overs. Makani will demonstrate how to properly clean a fish. Each person will have opportunity to clean fish, as long as there are enough fish to clean. Cleaning a fish is not a requirement, but if you never done it before, then is a golden opportunity to learn.
7:30 pm to 8:30 pm Family Style Dinner and Movie Night (Share High light reels on main screen)
Our last night on Oahu! Let’s share stories and watch a few highlight reels from the week. This will be a night to remember!
