Retreat Day 3 - Sunrise Hike and Navigating the Shore Break
2:30 am to 3:00 am -Breakfast Time
Kuliouou Sunrise hike is a long hike. We will start early! The tour will start between 2 and 3 am. We will be hiking at night for 2.5 hours to the edge of a 2000 foot cliff. This will be an unforgettable experience. You will learn how to hike at night and learn how to sustain yourself through a nutrition plan. The hike will prove to be a significant life lesson. The hike is a total of 4.1 miles with a 1600 foot elevation gain. The hike is challenging and will take us out of your comfort zone.
3:00 am to 3:30 am-Drive to Hike
It is about a 20 min drive to the beginning of the Hike. We will prepare and pack everything we need the prior to getting the start of the hike. We will be starting the hike in a neighborhood where everyone is sleeping. Out of respect for the community, we will be stealth when exiting the vehicle and walking to the trail head. Keep your voices down and avoid hanging out at the car for too long. Ideally we want to exit the vehicle and go directly to the trailhead in low voices.
3:30 am to 8:00 am-Hiking Kuliouou
Kuliouou Sunrise hike is a long hike. We will start early! It will be night when we start and the sun will just be rising when we get to the edge of the cliff. The hike is up hill for 1.5 to 2 hours. This will be an unforgettable experience. You will learn how to hike at night and learn how to sustain yourself through a nutrition plan. The hike will prove to be a significant life lesson. The hike is a total of 4.1 miles with a 1600 foot elevation gain. The hike is challenging and will take us out of your comfort zone.
Hiking at night! Have your head lamp ready. Please refrain from turning on the headlamp until we get onto the trail. There will be streetlights illuminating our path until the trail head. Glow sticks will be attached to your pack or your person. At the trail head crack your glow stick. Always Have a small compass and whistle on you.
We want to arrive at least 15 minutes before sunrise. Sunrise will vary throughout the year.

8:00 am to 11:00 - Rest and Recover
Use this time to recover from the hike. This is your free time. If you do leave, we ask that you return by 1:00 pm.
11:00 am to 1:00 pm – Chicken, Rice and Vegetables
Lunch will be Chicken, Rice, Vegetables. We will either bake or soak the chicken in secret sauce and cook it over the stove. Chicken will be served with sauté broccoli and Carrots. White rice will be made available.
1:00 pm to 4:00 pm - Navigating the Shore Break
Yes, we will spend some time hanging out at the beach, but we will also learn how to properly read the waves, the current, and the dangers. This will be a very valuable life lesson. This is not something to take lightly. We will learn how the current changes due to the shape of the shoreline. We will learn how waves break when it hits shallower water. We will learn how rip currents occur and how to navigate it. We will enter and exit water through dangerous surf. After this you will be more aware of dangers at any beach. More importantly you will be able to teach others and keep more people safe around the ocean.
5:30 pm to 7:30 pm Food Preparation Korean BBQ
We have a strong Korean presence in Hawaii. Korean food and Korean culture is part of this melting pot we call Hawaii. So tonight we eat Korean food! Kalbi Ribs and Kalbi Chicken will be the main meat dish. This will be complemented with a few side dishes to choose from to include: Kimchi, Korean Cucumber Salad, Sauteed Zucchini (Ae-Hobak Namul), Korean Seasoned Bean Sprouts, Korean Spinach (Sigeumchi Namul), Steamed Egg Plant (Gaji Namul), Spicy Korean Radish (Mu Saengchae Namul), Braised Tofu (Dubu Jorim). Rice will be available.
We will need someone to sign up for this early and decide how we are going to source and prepare food.
7:30 pm - 8:30 pm Family style Meal
What an epic day of adventure! Together we will sit at talk and sample food we never tried before.
